New restrictions on the F-1 student visa program could have implications extending well beyond international students and universities. In their recent The Dallas Morning News commentary, “Restrictions on student visas could impact more than universities,” Munsch Hardt Dallas Immigration Shareholder Irina Plumlee and Attorney Kristy Uyen Le examine changes to the student visa system and what they could mean for employers, workforce planning and the broader U.S. economy.

Plumlee and Uyen write:

“When immigration policies make the U.S. less attractive to international students at the beginning of their careers, the country risks losing not only their economic contributions as students but also the skills and talent they could contribute to our workforce after graduation.”

As international enrollment declines and other countries compete for the same talent, the authors argue that the effects of changes to the student visa system could extend well beyond university campuses, influencing the future U.S. workforce and economy.
